    What Makes a Good Spritz?

The simplicity of flavors and subtle sweetness is what makes a delicious spritz. The perfect brunch drink for Mascarpone Toast with Lox or Lemon Ricotta Blueberry Pancakes!

That's why elderflower is the perfect addition to this basil cucumber spritz. The floral notes and subtle sweetness add the perfect amount of flavor to the prosecco without overtaking the whole drink.

A spritzer should never be over-sweetened and a St. Germain basil cucumber spritz is the perfect combination of refreshing and crisp. It can be enjoyed at any time of the day!

    Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for a st germain spritz.
    • Prosecco. I like to use brut prosecco which is less sweet. I think too much sweetness overtakes this drink. The subtle sweetness combined with the St. Germain elderflower is perfect.
    • Elderflower Liqueur (St Germain). An elderflower liqueur is a floral liqueur with a subtle sweetness. It adds more depth to this classic prosecco spritz.
    • Cucumber. I love the crisp and refreshing flavor muddled cucumber provides. Cucumber, technically a fruit, also provides its own subtle sweetness.
    • Basil. Basil flavor can be so fleeting but it reminds me of the beginning of the summer which is why it's perfect for this drink. Add a basil leaf to garnish to enhance the aroma of this drink on each sip.
    • Club Soda. Top it with a little club soda to reach the top of the glass and combine the flavors of the drink. It also adds more carbonation for that spritz feel!

*Please see the recipe card below for more information on the ingredients.

How to Make a St Germaine Basil Cucumber Spritz

Step 1: Combine elderflower liqueur with cucumbers and basil in a shaker. Muddle the cucumber into a pulp.

Step 2: Fill a wine glass with ice. Strain the muddled liquid into the glass. Fill the glass with prosecco then top with club soda. Stir to combine. Garnish with a cucumber and basil leaf.

Serve this St. Germain Basil Cucumber Spritz on a delicious brunch menu along with The Italian Breakfast Sandwich or Eggs and Lentils!

How to Make this a Mocktail

This delicious drink is not only reserved for those who want an alcoholic beverage. This can easily be transferred into a Mocktail with some simple substitutions!

    1. Substitute prosecco and club soda with 5 oz of lemon/lime seltzer. Instead of elderflower liqueur, you can substitute an elderflower syrup or use a non-alcoholic elderflower Liqueur like Monin or Seedlip.
    2. Muddle cucumber, basil, and elderflower. Strain into a wine glass filled with ice and add in the seltzer. Stir well to combine and serve with a cucumber and basil garnish.

    Top-Tips

    1. Do not shake this drink. Not only will the prosecco make your cocktail shaker explode it will also significantly change the flavor of the prosecco.
    2. When serving, place a basil leaf flat in your hand and smack it to release its aroma. Garnish your drink with this basil leaf for a delicious basil-forward aroma when drinking.

    Key Tools and Equipment

    1. You need a strainer for this recipe to make it clean and refreshing. After you muddle the cucumber and basil with the elderflower, you want to strain that liquid over the ice in the wine glass without letting pieces of basil leaves or cucumbers fall into the drink.
    2. You'll need a muddler to muddle the cucumber and basil or if you don't have one, you could dry shake the cucumber and basil with ice and add a little club soda to strain out the liquid.

    Recipe FAQs

    What does elderflower taste like?

Elderflower liqueur is known for its floral notes and subtle sweetness with St. Germain being the most well-known brand to create this flavored liqueur.

What is the difference between dry and brut prosecco?

Dry vs. brut is all about the amount of residual sugar in a sparkling wine. Dry or extra dry has more residual sugar whereas brut or extra brut is closer to 0 residual sugar.
