Why Cut Sweet Potatoes in Half Before Cooking

I don't see any benefit in not cooking your sweet potatoes this way.

    • Instead of taking 1 hour to cook, sweet potatoes take about 30 minutes.
    • The sweet potatoes get a crispy caramelized crust when cooked open on a baking tray.
    • It's only 5 simple ingredients to make an addicting sweet potato side dish.

    Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

    Ingredients for the recipe.
    • Seasoning- I use a simple seasoning of salt and pepper, and let the caramelization of the sweet potato do most of the heavy lifting in the flavor department. You can add your favorite seasoning if you want to change it up.
    • Parmesan- The parmesan adds an extra crispy layer on top of the sweet potato. It can be skipped or substituted with another aged cheese like pecorino or grana padano.

*Please see the recipe card below for more information on the ingredients.

    Pro-Tips

    1. Sweet potatoes come in all different shapes and sizes. After 30 minutes, I test them by touch. If they feel like an unflexed muscle, they're ready.
    2. If you don't have parchment paper, you can just place them on the tray. Parchment paper makes it a lot easier to clean up!

    Serving Suggestions

These roasted sweet potato halves are perfect to serve with any of your favorite proteins below!

    • Chicken- These are easily paired with Italian Chicken Cutlets, Cast Iron Chicken Breast, or Pesto Stuffed Chicken.
    • Pork- Try roasted sweet potato halves with Bourbon Peach Glazed Pork Chops or Italian Cast Iron Pork Tenderloin!
    • Fish- I like these alongside fish like Cast Iron Lemon Dill Salmon or Baked Red Snapper.
    • Vegetables- Serve with other sides like Italian Lacinato Kale Recipe (Tuscan), Summer Farro Salad with Cannellini Beans, or Roasted Carrots and Fennel.

    Recipe FAQs

How long do roasted sweet potato halves take in the oven?

They take 30 minutes when cooked at 400 degrees F and develop the most delicious caramelized parmesan crust!

Does it matter if they're cut side down?

It won't change how long it will cook for, but if you cook it cut side down, the sugars in the potato will caramelize against the pan, making a delicious crispy crust.

What spices can I add to the halves?

I like to keep it simple with salt and pepper, but if you want more flavor, you can add paprika, cumin, garlic powder, or onion powder.

I don't think I'll ever make a sweet potato another way to be honest. But maybe I'll have to eat my words. Let us know what you think of this method.
